And Matt Taylor’s wonder goal was the catalyst as the Blues secured a comfortable 2-0 Premiership win over the Toffees.

His first-time volley from a full 45 yards after 14 minutes took everyone by surprise, including Everton keeper Tim Howard, who was left shell-shocked and rooted to his spot by the audacity of the strike.

Kanu, who laid the ball off for the left-back, added Pompey’s second 11 minutes later as Harry Redknapp’s side secured their first victory in six games.

Taylor’s goal came during a hot streak for the fans’ favourite, with his two goals helping the Blues to a 2-2 draw with Aston Villa a week earlier.

He also scored in Pompey’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal at the Emirates the next time out, before rounding off a memorable December with a goal in the 3-2 defeat against Bolton on December 30.
