Adams: Pompey v Plymouth is a proper match

The Pilgrims boss is looking forward to sampling the atmosphere created at Fratton Park again this weekend.

Adams likened the match to a derby and feels the naval links with the two cities adds significance.

He told the Plymouth Herald: ‘This is a proper football match.

‘We enjoy playing there because of the great atmosphere that the stadium brings and we always take a good following with us.

‘I think the games between ourselves and Portsmouth are the best for atmosphere than anything else that I have I had at this football club, except for obviously against Liverpool (in the FA Cup third round last season).

‘It’s like a derby match. The two teams want to go and play football and it’s usually a good spectacle.

‘When you have 18,000 fans it does generate a good atmosphere.

‘It is called the Dockyard Derby from the point of view that both football clubs have got naval bases in the cities as well.

‘I think that’s important for Portsmouth and Plymouth.’

Adams expects it to be a slightly different experience for him this weekend with Paul Cook no longer at Pompey.

A fierce rivalry developed between the pair in the clubs’ meetings, but the Scot anticipates it won’t be quite the same with Kenny Jackett.

He said: ‘It could be a bit quieter.

‘We (Cook) have already met up at the Wigan game this season. It will be different with Kenny Jackett rather than Paul on the sidelines.

‘He (Jackett) has signed a two-year extension to his deal so the board of directors there must be happy with how things have gone since he has gone into the football club.’
