Pompey coach Ian Woan hailed ‘magician’ Kanu after the Nigerian’s winner in a 1-0 success over Barnsley.
With the game seemingly heading for a draw, the substitute popped up on 84 minutes to hand the Blues their first victory on home turf since defeating Nottingham Forest on October 30.
It also gave Pompey a second successive victory to lift them up to 16th in the league.
And Woan, who took the post-match press conference in place of boss Steve Cotterill, was full of praise for veteran Kanu.
Woan said: ‘King is a magician and is the perfect player to bring off the bench.
‘When you want someone to conjure up something, he is your man.
‘He created three or four opportunities when he came on but we know he’s capable of that.’
Woan added: ‘It wasn’t a great game but the most pleasing thing was another clean sheet.
‘That’s very encouraging.’
