Pompey are set to go for the jugular against Oldham tomorrow.
Blues boss Michael Appleton believes his team need to develop a forward-thinking philosophy over the coming weeks – starting against the Latics.
After having his team thrown together in double-quick time, Appleton has had little opportunity to shape his side on the training pitch.
That has led to him delivering an attacking message over one of all-out defence to his Blues troops.
Appleton said: ‘We won’t win a lot of games 1-0 this season.
‘To do that we will have to restrict sides this season – and that is not my philosophy.
‘If we win we’ll do it by scoring goals.
‘My picture wasn’t to have a team who just went on the attack non-stop.
‘But with what has been thrown at us that’s what we’ve had to do.
‘Things have not been ideal this season, so maybe we have to concentrate on taking games to teams.
‘Then we’ll keep our fingers crossed we go out there and score more than the opposition do.’
Despite his decision to play on the front foot, Appleton explained he still feels there are no excuses for the mistakes his team made in the 4-2 defeat at Carlisle last weekend.
He said: ‘We have to cut out silly mistakes. There’s no doubt about that.
‘We made silly errors and played in the wrong areas at the wrong time last weekend. We can’t do that.’
