Michael Appleton faced up to relegation and insisted: Now I want the chance to rebuild.
The Pompey boss believes his men can take pride from their 10 point deduction for going into administration being the key factor in their fall into League One.
That drop in division was confirmed today following the 2-1 loss to Derby at Fratton Park.
Appleton thought his team had enough chances to get a result from the game.
But today’s outcome pales into insignificance compared to the bigger picture.
Appleton said: ‘We did enough to not lose it looking at the chances
‘We had clear opportunities.
‘It was a controversial way to lose the game.
‘It looked very, very soft.
‘He shouldn’t have even been in that position in the first place. We probably deserved to concede it.
‘I expected Bristol City to take care of Barnsley.
‘Now we have to finish the season off as best we can.
‘If we didn’t lose the 10 points we wouldn’t have gone down. That’s important to pride.
‘Now we have to rebuild for next season.’
