Andy Awford was delighted with his troops after Pompey continued their impressive start to the new campaign with a 2-0 success over Northampton.

First-half goals from Jed Wallace and Craig Westcarr secured the win as Awford made four changes to the side that beat Cambridge 2-1 on Saturday and rotated the squad to great success.

Awford said: ‘Three points is always pleasing but the manner in which we did it, I thought was very good.

‘We played some excellent stuff at times and we were deservedly two goals up at the interval.

‘But we were very professional in the second half and closed the game out.

‘We executed the game plan perfectly.

‘I’ve left a couple out tonight to give them a breather because we have got such a strong squad and could get some fresh legs in there.

‘We’ve made changes but the level of the performance hasn’t dropped.

‘When I do make changes, everyone buys into it. It’s a good result and now we go again against Oxford on Saturday.’
