ANDY AWFORD has revealed he has been given an ‘indication’ of next season’s playing budget.

However, the Pompey boss remains adamant player contracts will only be dealt with at the end of the current campaign.

We have to make sure we do better on the pitch so the focus will be what is going on there, contracts can take care of themselves

The club board met with chief executive Mark Catlin in London last week, with the playing budget among items on the agenda.

While Awford remains on a 12-month rolling contract, there are 11 players whose deals expire in the summer.

They include Ryan Taylor, Joe Devera, Ben Chorley and Wes Fogden.

Meanwhile, talks with representatives of Dan Butler and Adam Webster – who will also be out of contract – initially opened at the end of last year.

But with seven matches remaining, including today’s trip to Carlisle (3pm), Awford has put on hold finalising his retained list.

And the outcome is scheduled to become public following the final-day-of-the-season visit of York to Fratton Park on May 2.

Awford said: ‘Nothing has changed on the contract front.

‘I have now been given an indication of the budget but we have to focus on this season and take care of contracts at the end of the campaign.

‘We only have a month of the season to go and there are some important games coming up.

‘We have to make sure we do better on the pitch so the focus will be what is going on there, contracts can take care of themselves.

‘It is only a month until the season finishes, the players have known that.’

The Blues face struggling Carlisle today before taking on Plymouth at Fratton Park on Bank Holiday Monday.

They are curently lying 14th in League Two, having missed out on a pre-season call to challenge for the play-offs.
