ANDY AWFORD has refused to rule out bringing in more new defenders.

Alex Wynter this week became the seventh signing for Pompey during a busy summer of recruitment.

Nicky Shorey, Jed Wallace, Ryan Bird and Adam Webster have also had their deals renewed to bolster the squad for the League Two campaign ahead.

Wynter, who is on a season-long loan, can operate across the back four, providing Awford with precious versatility.

He joins Shorey, Webster, Dan Butler, Ben Chorley, Jack Whatmough, Joe Devera and Danny East in the Blues’ defensive pool.

But Pompey’s manager would consider adding to those ranks if the right candidate emerges.

He said: ‘I would never say never, especially if the right player becomes available.

‘As I have said before, if the season starts tomorrow I am comfortable with what we have.

‘But then Alex became available and we have gone and got him and added another quality player to the squad.

‘If I can add more quality I will, as long as it doesn’t stretch the budget – which it won’t.

‘That is not to say I am done now for defenders, there might be more to come, but they have to be the right ones.

‘We got a nod late last week that Alex might be available so we got in touch with Palace and I am really grateful to them.

‘There is versatility all over the pitch now. You don’t need a 35-man squad if you have got six or seven players that can be versatile – and we certainly have got that.’

Defenders Bondz N’Gala, Marcos Painter and Yassin Moutaouakil have been released.

Meanwhile, Sonny Bradley was sold to Crawley and Daniel Alfei’s loan ended.
