Andy Awford praised his much-changed Pompey side after pulling off a Capital One Cup defeat of Peterborough.
Miles Storey’s 12th-minute goal was enough to triumph over Darren Ferguson’s League One side tonight.
The Blues fully deserved the result, with Awford’s decision to employ a 3-5-2 formation fully vindicated in a strong team display.
It gives the Fratton Park side their first win in the competition since 2010 and now they await tomorrow night’s draw to discover their next opposition.
Pompey’s boss said: ‘I thought in the first half we caused them all sorts of problems with the way we played – maybe the way we set up probably surprised a few people.
‘But I’ve got strength in depth in the squad and we can rotate if we need to without dropping a level of performance.
‘We’ve got some very good players and that was evident tonight.
‘It was a great finish by Miles Storey, a great run and he has worked it well across the keeper into the bottom corner.
‘And Craig Westcarr put in a fantastic performance – he was terrific.
‘He linked it and scored a goal I can’t believe was disallowed.
‘I know the ball has hit on the arm but he was a yard away – you can’t get out of the way of that.’
