Andy Awford pinpointed the Pompey spirit as the key to a winning start as Blues boss.

Awford’s side eased their relegation fears with a massive 2-1 win over nine-man Newport County today.

Ryan Taylor and Jed Wallace got the crucial goals which put five points between 21st-placed Pompey and the relegation places.

Awford heaped praise on the determination of his players to see through the game and get the win.

He said: ‘We got there with our spirit and determination.

‘We used the spirit that flows through this football club.

‘I got a reaction and we most importantly got the three points.

‘But it wasn’t going to be easy because we’re Pompey!

‘The lads are naturally a bit nervous with things how they’ve been.

‘There was a hunger to see it through, though, and I’m proud of them.’
