Pompey’s under-performing players have been told they face the axe against Stevenage tomorrow night.

Andy Awford has vowed to ring the changes in the aftermath of Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Bury.

The Blues boss will also reassess his often-criticised wing-back system for the League Two visit of Graham Westley’s side to Fratton Park.

The recently-favoured 3-5-2 formation failed in the first-half at Gigg Lane and was replaced with a 4-4-2 diamond after the break.

Awford’s men have won just one of their past nine league matches to leave them 14th in the table.

But the Pompey boss has pledged alterations to his starting line-up against Boro in an attempt to turn around his side’s current form.

‘I have had lots of ups and downs and will have many more,’ admitted Awford.

‘My job now is to try to lift the players, let’s go back to basics, let’s analyse it and see where we think we are going wrong.

‘Obviously, we are not scoring enough goals – that is plain and simple to see, whether that is personnel, whether that is creativity, whether that is system, whatever it is let’s analyse it and try to get back out there tomorrow night and start scoring some goals again.

‘You assess it every game and that is no different. I am going to have to look at a few things definitely.

‘There will be changes tomorrow. That will be because of the turnaround of games Saturday-Tuesday and, obviously, some players aren’t doing well enough at the moment and therefore you have to give other players an opportunity.

‘I need to take my time, I am not going to rush into selecting a team, I need to have a little think about that and see what we are going to do.’

James Dunne is set to return after missing the trip to Bury through suspension.
