Kanu will be restored to Pompey’s squad tonight.

And he will be joined by the fit-again Benjani.

Kanu was surprisingly dropped from the match-day 16 for Derby at the weekend.

It was the first time since February he has not made a Pompey squad.

In his absence, there was none of that old magic to call on from the bench as the Blues slumped to a 3-1 loss.

Of course, everyone is right in hindsight.

But Guy Whittingham will bring the veteran back tonight.

He said: ‘Dropping Kanu is a decision that we made and one we felt was right.

‘Hindsight tells you maybe you might have needed him in there. Who knows?

‘Although you can’t say that because he wasn’t there.

‘We just went with what we felt were the right subs to cover the areas we wanted to cover.

‘But that is in the past now.

‘We look forward and Kanu is in the squad tonight.

‘Perhaps at 3-0 down he would have come in and made a difference.

‘He might have done, he might not. You never know.’

In addition, Benjani is available again following a hamstring injury.

The complaint has kept him out for three games.

In his absence, Dave Kitson has returned and largely impressed.

Up until the injury, Benjani had started six successive matches, scoring in one of them.

The likelihood is he will be on the bench tomorrow as he patiently awaits his chance once again.

He added: ‘Benjani is back in the squad as well.

‘The hamstring seems to have cleared up so we are pleased with that.

‘We have got a lot to choose from, which is exactly what we want after the defeat.’
