Steve Cotterill is still hopeful of new recruits arriving before Reading.

Cotterill toasted the return of Benjani to Fratton Park following his whirlwind arrival.

Benjani was unveiled on Saturday after signing a one-year deal after leaving Blackburn.

Pompey are also hot on the trail of Erik Huseklepp and are hopeful of landing the Norwegian international for £1.75m.

There is less confidence of bringing in Ipswich midfielder Grant Leadbitter, however.

Cotterill believes he could see two further permanent signings through the door along with a temporary addition.

He said: ‘I’m still hopeful of the loan and a permanent.

‘I might be hopeful of two permanents. That may be before Reading, I’m not sure.’

Cotterill is now weighing up whether to throw Benjani in against Reading tomorrow.

The Zimbabwe international is still behind in terms of pre-season training but Cotterill is delighted to have him in his ranks.

Cotterill said: ‘I’ve felt we’ve needed firepower.

‘I think we probably still need another striker and maybe another after that.

‘Benji brings energy and maybe for a year it might be what we need.

‘He will give everyone a lift – he has done already.

‘He turned down a contract at Blackburn, so I rang him and 24 hours later we were finalising his contract in a car park.

‘It has given us a boost. It is amazing how quickly it happened but we’re pleased to get him.

‘Now we have to assess when he goes on the pitch.

‘It might be one where he goes in the deep end and we see what we get from him. I don’t know yet.’
