Substitute Ryan Bird rescued a point for Pompey as they claimed a 1-1 draw at Torquay United.

The former Burnham man netted his first goal for the club to earn a point after the Blues turned in a poor display at Plainmoor.

Pompey got off to the worst possible start as they fell behind inside 17 seconds following some chaotic defending as Jordan Chapell rifled in a low shot.

And from that point, Pompey were ragged and struggled to create any real openings.

While they improved after the break, they were still lacking quality in the final third, with only a Johnny Ertl long-range effort forcing the Torquay keeper into any meaningful action.

Jed Wallace also went close as he fired wide from close range and it looked to be heading for one of those days.

But Bird, on as a 76th-minute sub, saved the day for Pompey nine minutes from time as he bundled home from Wallace’s low cross in front of the 1,500 away fans who made the trip.
