Steve Cotterill admitted he has no idea if Pompey are closer to boosting their squad.

The Blues boss is still waiting to see if his much-needed recruitment drive is going to click into gear.

Cotterill believes he needs a squad of 20 senior pros to give him the depth to compete this season.

Christian Dailly arrived on Saturday on a month’s contract after failing to agree a new deal with Charlton.

But despite his arrival, Cotterill could still only name four subs at Middlesbrough.

The 47-year-old insisted he is not yet frustrated with his wait for more signings but that could change if it goes on.

Cotterill said: ‘I don’t know the honest answer to whether we’re getting any closer to getting players.

‘I’m not frustrated – yet.

‘I’m okay but it will get frustrating if it carries on.

‘I’m sure the fans are with me on that.

‘We have to carry on and do it when we can do it.

‘In the mean time we have to keep our heads down and do our jobs.’

Liam Lawrence missed out at Boro with a mystery injury.

He first feared a hamstring problem but a scan has shown no tear in the area.

Cotterill said: ‘Liam was doing some running and he felt a sharp pain in his hamstring.

‘His hamstring has been scanned and there’s no injury.

‘But he’s getting a sharp pain on his right side.

‘We don’t know if that could be coming from his back or not.

‘He’s gutted about not being involved. The trouble with Liam is he wants to play – even when he’s not quite fit.

‘We need to look at him on Monday or Tuesday before we put him near the team.’
