Steve Cotterill has his eyes on the killer marksman he insists can change Pompey’s campaign.

The Blues boss believes his team desperately need a hitman capable of bagging 20 goals a season.

And he reckons he knows just the man to arrive at Fratton Park and hit the goal trail.

Cotterill, however, admitted he has no chance of landing a player of the calibre he is looking for on loan.

But he is keen to make strides to add a real poacher and is confident of his chances of bringing him in.

The Blues boss will have to wait to make his move until the January transfer window, though.

And he’ll need the green light from the club’s owners.

Cotterill said: ‘We need that striker who is going to score 20 goals.

‘Every team who is up there will have that.

‘We haven’t got that. I would say we haven’t got that at the moment.

‘They are easy to find but you have to buy them.

‘I would have my eye on someone I would stake my life on would come in and score 20 goals. But you have to buy him.

‘At this moment we may not have the finances to do that.

‘But who knows what will happen in the future?

‘It would have to be a permanent. You don’t loan players who will score 20 goals.

‘He’s a young one and there’s a resale value in him.

‘He will get a lot of goals for us. I think he would want to come here.

‘When it’s nip and tuck you need to take your chances. That would take the weight off but your goalscorer is always your most expensive one.’

Bjorn Helge Riise arrived last week on loan from Fulham to give Cotterill another body and offer the Blues boss some midfield energy and versatility.

But he admitted he feels he is still short of a more creative option in the middle of the park, too.

Cotterill has made it clear he would like three more permanent signings to give him the squad he wants.

He said: ‘I would have liked a different midfielder.

‘Bjorn is energetic and, with a lot of games coming up in not a lot if time, his energy and recovery would help us.

‘I’m not particularly happy, though, because we haven’t got competition in some areas.

‘We need a left-back with a left foot.

‘We need that central midfielder, I still feel, and we need a striker.

‘We are not fit and ready until we get those players.

‘If you look at the 19 we have got, without counting Bjorn, we have one missing and two keepers.

‘That makes 16 with two young boys who are not ready.

‘We’ve got what we’ve got and will carry on working with it until we get what we need.’
