Guy Whittingham felt his side got another worthwhile run-out, despite their 3-0 loss to Charlton Athletic.

The Championship side took the lead before half-time and then eased further ahead after the break to send Pompey to their first defeat of pre-season.

But Whittingham was not worried at the reverse and believes his side put up a decent display as they get themselves ready for August 3 against Oxford United.

The Blues boss said: ‘Let’s remember it’s a new team who are stil getting to know each other and Charlton play two divisions above us.

‘They had great movement and good pace in their side.

‘But I thought we defended well for long periods, even though we made a couple of mistakes.

‘It’s better to make these kind of mistakes in pre-season than against Oxford on the first day.

‘There was a lot to be pleased about with our performance. We are getting fitter all the time and there was some good passages of play.

‘We’ll get sharper as we get close to the new season.’
