Christian Burgess believes Pompey have built on the confidence they gained at Carlisle.

The Pompey centre-back was harshly adjudged to have given away the penalty which saw the Cumbrians take a half-time lead last Saturday.

We actually took a lot of confidence from the Carlisle game, even though we didn’t win

The Blues hit back to take a 2-1 advantage, before Danny Grainger levelled late on to ensure a share of the points.

But Burgess felt the team’s display was a signal that Pompey were on their way back to their more fluent form after an indifferent couple of weeks.

Paul Cook’s side continued that with a comprehensive 6-0 win over York City in midweek.

Pompey now bid to take that form into the trip to Wycombe, with Burgess setting his sights on a sixth away win of the season.

He said: ‘We actually took a lot of confidence from the Carlisle game, even though we didn’t win.

‘I thought we played really well and we got done by a thunderbolt of a shot in the last minute.

‘Then we played really well again in midweek against York. It was a satisfying scoreline and it had been coming for a little while.

‘The first one went in and the floodgates opened.

‘Straight afterwards, everyone was saying it was about taking that on this weekend.

‘You need to make that sort of result count and to get a run going.’

Burgess expects another stern physical challenge from the Chairboys and believes Pompey must earn the right to play their passing game.

He added: ‘Wycombe are a good, strong side and they will come at us.

‘They are combative and they are very good at what they do. We will go there and try to match them, then play our stuff.’
