The 24-year-old has finally overcome his injury issues to put himself in contention for Paul Cook’s side.

Buxton played at right-back in the FA Cup defeat to Wycombe, then served at left-back in the Checkatrade Trophy victory over Bristol Rovers.

On Monday night, he was pushed into an unfamiliar holding midfield role for the reserves against Wolves, carrying out the job superbly.

It’s an adaptability which makes him a precious commodity in Cook’s Blues squad.

And while right-back remains Buxton’s preference, he would be content with any playing duty for Pompey.

He said: ‘It’s mad, you have gone from being down to the bare bones and having no-one at right-back to having three available.

‘Gaz Evans has slotted in superbly to be fair. I think he has done well as a right-winger asked to play full-back and having to defend.

‘For myself and Drew now, it is about getting back in the team so Gaz can push back up into his normal position. He penetrates in behind and, out of the midfielders, is most likely to get you a goal.

‘We all have different attributes at right-back, but whoever steps in will do a job. We all want the same thing here – to win the league – and no matter who is playing are all behind each other and supporting each other.

‘I can play in different positions, though, and have been left-back, right-back, as a 16-year-old in the middle of three centre-backs, and then filled in midfield the other night.

‘That was the first time I have started there. I like getting on the ball and think I have a range of passing, you also have a bit of time there sat in front of the back four, you are on your own.

‘Although I did come on as substitute at Fratton Park for Accrington in the FA Cup last season and played in the centre of midfield.

‘The first thing I did was smash Michael Doyle with a tackle! He got me back off the ball, with studs down the back of my calf!

‘I just need to get minutes under my belt, wherever it is. I enjoy playing football – perhaps I’ll start pushing the central midfielders now!’

Buxton has made four appearances since his August arrival from Accrington.

Injuries have chiefly played a part – now he is ready to push for regular football.

He added: ‘I will be waiting patiently for my chance and when I get it hopefully take it.

‘Fingers crossed, that’s me done now, the injuries put behind me and I can kick on with my Pompey career and get into the team.

‘Coming to a new club and it being stop-start, stop-start with the injuries I’ve had has been frustrating.

‘Hopefully the injuries are behind me now and I can kick on and steer clear of the treatment room.’
