FABIO Capello has resigned as England manager with immediate effect, the FA has announced.

It comes as bookmakers today suspended bets on former Pompey boss Harry Redknapp taking the national hot seat.

In a statement, the FA said Mr Capello tendered his resignation at a meeting with chairman David Bernstein and general secretary Alex Horne at Wembley Stadium this afternoon.

The meeting was held over Mr Capello’s comments on Italian TV following the FA’s decision to strip John Terry of England captaincy.

Mr Bernstein said: ‘I would like to stress that during today’s meeting and throughout his time as England manager, Fabio has conducted himself in an extremely professional manner.

‘We have accepted Fabio’s resignation, agreeing this is the right decision. We would like to thank Fabio for his work with the England team and wish him every success in the future.’
