PAUL COOK is convinced utility man Ben Davies can have a crucial Pompey presence this season.

The 34-year-old last week signed a 12-month deal, following a successful Fratton Park trial.

What I do want is for Ben to be a utility player if possible because I think he will have such an effect in every area he plays in

He then lined-up at right-back in Saturday’s impressive 3-0 victory over Dagenham & Redbridge on the opening day of the League Two season.

The energetic Davies made an instant impact with the Fratton faithful, even earning an ovation after chasing down the Daggers keeper in the final few minutes.

And Cook believes the gutsy former Sheffield United man can be a key performer during the campaign ahead.

He said: ‘You look at Ben Davies’ performance at right-back on Saturday, I thought he was outstanding.

‘That’s what he does, that is why people like him have had good careers.

‘What I do want is for Ben to be a utility player if possible, because I think he will have such an effect in every area he plays in.

‘So the search goes on for other players, but it’s a pleasing thing for the club to have people like Ben around as well.

‘He is a footballer, he looks after himself, that is why people like that are good professionals and play for as long as they can.

‘He’s a good pro and that’s the nature of the game.’

Davies was a free agent this summer having left the Blades following 39 appearances and seven goals since February 2014.

Previously, he’s played for Derby, Notts County, Shrewsbury, Chester, Kidderminster and Walsall.

The versatile player featured in five of the Blues’ pre-season fixtures.
