Bubbling Paul Cook was all smiles after Pompey barged their way into the automatic promotion spots.

A 2-0 victory at Crawley ensured the Blues entered League Two’s top three for the first time in five months and 10 days.

It represented an important breakthrough, achieved through second-half goals from Christian Burgess and Kyle Bennett.

Cook’s men showed superb character as they responded to last weekend’s tremendously disappointing display against Crewe.

And Pompey boss was delighted.

He said: ‘We really haven’t lost many away from home. We are doing okay and if we can just do a bit better quickly it won’t half help.

‘Saturday night everybody thinks Plymouth have sailed away but tonight they have lost 3-0 so they haven’t. Three days in this is a long time.

‘There is so much to play for for everyone and we are in the thick of it.

‘Tonight we were under massive pressure as a team, what would defeat have done for us as a club?

‘It would give all the chasing ones that we are going to buckle and go under, the fans would have had massive disappointment - but we haven’t.’
