Paul Cook toasted his impressive side after Pompey’s season got off to a winning start.
The Blues cruised to a 3-0 success over Dagenham & Redbridge this afternoon, with Kyle Bennett (two) and Gareth Evans netting in the second half.
It was an excellent Fratton Park display from the Blues, who tasted victory in an opening fixture for the first time since 2006.
For Cook, the result in front of a rocking Fratton faithful was thoroughly deserved and he was delighted with a side containing nine debutants.
He said: ‘Our focus all year, I don’t mind saying, is trying to get promoted, we want to be promoted. that is the start of a long journey and it’s a good first step, a solid first step.
‘You rely on the quality of your players to see you through.
‘Kyle Bennett has turned up today, we know Gary Roberts will turn up, Gareth Evans has scored goals,
‘Matt Tubbs is just learning how to play that role and I thought he was getting into some great positions without ever being picked out.
‘I thought, defensively, we looked sound. I thought we limited Dagenham in my opinion to very few attempts on goal, so all-in-all it’s a pleasing day.
‘Everyone can go and have a pint tonight and say they had a good day.
‘We are certainly not getting carried away but these days are very important.’
