Cook won promotion at Chesterfield in 2013-14 and has also taken two clubs to play-off campaigns.

And he believes a relaxed playing squad is the key to maintaining their top-three presence.

He said: ‘You have to enjoy it, relax and play, you must play well.

‘If Portsmouth Football Club play well, we’ll get something out 90 per cent of our games.

‘There’s no fear factor, we have 16,000 fans behind us, the fear factor would come from having 16,000 against you!

‘We’ve got great support in this city, we have good players, a great squad and it’s down to ourselves now.

‘It’s not about anyone else. People can go on about times you kick off and different stuff, but it’s just about us.

‘When we win games other clubs us will see us. They will look and say “oh, they’ve won”. We carry a little bit more than every club in this league, that’s life, we have to deal with that.

‘But we have a great chance to get promoted out this league with nine games to go – and must remain relaxed and focused on achieving what our fans want.’
