Steve Cotterill admitted Leicester made Pompey sweat for another huge win on the road.
The Blues kept up their unlikely play-off hopes with a 1-0 win at the Walkers Stadium.
Cotterill believes it is now very much game on for their hopes of making the top six.
But he felt the home side made Pompey work hard for their success.
He said: ‘It was a tough match and they made us sweat a bit.
‘We needed that result to push us towards the play-offs. That’s what we got.
‘I’d say we are definitely now in the hunt for the top six.
‘They boys did all I asked of them.’
Cotterill reserved praise for David Nugent, who struck the only goal of the game, and Jamie Ashdown.
He said: ‘What a great finish from Nuge - and I thought Jamie Ashdown made a few decent saves.’
