Steve Cotterill has admitted it is a close call naming his goalkeeper for tomorrow’s Championship curtain-raiser.
Stephen Henderson arrived from Bristol City in the summer to rival Jamie Ashdown for the No1 spot.
The 23-year-old Irishman picked up four player-of-the-season trophies during an outstanding campaign on loan at Yeovil last term.
As for Ashdown, he had the best season of his career when he impressed as Pompey’s undisputed keeper.
Now both are vying for a starting place at the Riverside tomorrow.
Cotterill said: ‘It’s close, they both have their strengths and both have their weaknesses.
‘It’s funny, they are not the same strengths and weaknesses, they are different.
‘They are both good goalkeepers, though.
‘But if you could roll them into one they would be very, very good goalkeepers. They would be tops.
‘But they have both done very well and we are happy with what we have got in that department.
‘Jamie had a very good season last term. There were a couple of dodgy games but he will be the first to admit that.
‘After 50 games, you have got to allow your goalkeeper a little bit of leeway.
‘And we’ve got a very young one in Stephen, so we are very happy with that.’
