Steve Cotterill hailed ‘fantastic’ Pompey after their 2-0 win at Doncaster.
The Blues banished their 10-match winless run with an impressive display at the Keepmoat Stadium.
Dave Kitson headed the visitors in front on 42 minutes, before Joel Ward doubled the lead seven minutes after the break.
Cotterill felt the Blues, who kept a clean sheet for the first time since a 2-0 win at Norwich on December 11, fully deserved the three points.
And he hoped the result would boost confidence among his troops.
Cotterill said: ‘The lads were fantastic.
‘We did well and the players gave everything. We deserved to win that game.
‘We scored at the right time and, hopefully, that gives us a bit of confidence now moving forward.’
Cotterill reserved praise for Kitson, who got a kick in the mouth while making his brave header for the opener.
The Blues boss added: ‘I’m so pleased for Dave Kitson.
‘He’s got a big lip after that and he was brave.’
