David Forde toasted his maiden Pompey victory as their season finally kicked into life.
Gary Roberts struck twice in the final 10 minutes to clinch a 2-0 win over Colchester United.
The manager told me to get off after the final whistle and stop milking it! I was enjoying the moment and it’s great to show your appreciation to the fansDavid Forde
The result ended a poor start to the League Two campaign for Paul Cook’s men, with two points from their opening three games.
Yet it was all smiles at Fratton Park on Saturday in a deserved triumph.
Forde himself produced several crucial saves during the second half as he recorded a first Fratton Park clean sheet.
And the Millwall loanee was delighted with the outcome.
He said: ‘It’s a feeling I have been waiting for for a few weeks.
‘The manager told me to get off after the final whistle and stop milking it!
‘I was enjoying the moment and it’s great to show your appreciation to the fans.
‘I felt we should have got the win against Carlisle in the first game but it’s great to now have that as well as keep a clean sheet.
‘We were disappointed with Tuesday night and it was a great response.
‘We deserved the win against Colchester, absolutely.
‘We were by far the better side in the first half and were unlucky to go in at the break goalless.
‘Then coming out for the second half I was called on to make a save.
‘You see it happen so many times – you miss a chance and the next minute they go up the other end and score.
‘Gary got the penalty and the second was a great goal provided by Conor Chaplin, who was a handful when he came on.
‘He was a right little livewire and so was Noel Hunt and that just shows the strength in depth we have in the squad. It’s important we all stick together.’
