Simon Eastwood insists he has the belief in his ability to remain Pompey’s No1.

The keeper promises he’s got the strength of character to silence the doubters as the Blues go to Crewe tomorrow.

Eastwood came in for flak for a costly mistake which led to Oldham’s winner last weekend.

The 23-year-old responded with a sound display in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with MK Dons at Fratton Park.

Eastwood has been pleased with his form since coming into the first team.

And he remains confident he can handle criticism by showing he is up to the job.

‘As a keeper, it happens – you make mistakes,’ said Eastwood.

‘It wasn’t a howler at Oldham but I should have saved it.

‘There’s been a bit of stuff in the press caning me for it but that’s what happens, you have to get on with it.

‘You have to be strong enough and mentally tough to get through it. I think I am.

‘I’m a 23-year-old goalkeeper. It’s going to happen.

‘You make mistakes but it’s how you get over them.

‘I made a mistake last Saturday but thought I did well in the second half.

‘You struggle as a keeper if you make a mistake and it finishes 1-0.

‘If we’d won, it wouldn’t have been talked about.

‘But people have to write about something, don’t they.

‘I’m getting experience and I think I’ve done well since I came into the team.

‘You have to be mentally tough and train every day and that’s what I’ve been doing.

‘It’s one mistake and you get hammered for it.

‘But since I’ve been in the team, I’ve been happy with how I’ve been playing.

‘I’m confident in my own ability and know Guy, Andy and Knightsy are, too.

‘You have to give it your all but mistakes do happen.

‘It’s a confidence thing and my confidence will stay high.’

Pompey travel to Crewe in improving form – having claimed three draws from their past four matches.

And they have conceded only three goals in the past four games – big progress on the 19 shipped in the five outings previous to that.

Eastwood said: ‘We’ve been solid in the last few games.

‘We defended well on Tuesday and it’s impressive to see us create as well.

‘We’ve got together in the changing room and said we have to tighten up.

‘Defenders have come in and out but it finally looks like we have a back four or five which may not change.

‘A win would be nice now! If we get a win we’ll kick on.

‘We’re looking better and creating opportunities, so hopefully tomorrow is the day.

‘The last few games – and how we’ve played – gives us massive confidence.

‘We got at MK Dons and did not give them much of a sniff.

‘We could have put the game to bed and scored three or four.

‘Hopefully we’ll do that at Crewe.’
