Guy Whittingham applauded the display of Simon Eastwood after watching the keeper inspire Pompey to a second successive home victory.

Eastwood saved Gary McSheffrey’s early penalty.

It was the first of many exceptional stops as the Blues kept a clean sheet against Coventry.

Goalscorer Jed Wallace was named as the sponsors’ man of the match.

Patrick Agyemang drew a standing ovation when he was substituted in the 90th minute.

Eastwood’s contribution, though, was also crucial as Whittingham’s men climbed off the foot of the League One.

And for the caretaker boss it was another superb display from the former Huddersfield stopper.

He said: ‘There were one or two who stood out, I thought.

‘Jed wasn’t my choice for man of the match, although is getting more consistent in his play.

‘I thought Pat (Agyemang) had a very good game and I thought Simon Eastwood had a very good game.

‘Simon is just one of those who trains hard, works hard at his game and concentrates well.

‘That mistake at Oldham was just a one-off that every now and again happens but I think from then – and before then – he has given us some very solid performances.

‘Everybody has improved, not just him. I think when people around you are raising their game you always go the same way.’

It was the seventh-minute penalty save from McSheffrey which laid the platform for the 2-0 success.

Whittingham did not agree with referee Phil Gibb’s decision to award it for Shaun Cooper’s challenge on Cody McDonald.

He added: ‘I must give a bit of due to the analysts, they look at the penalty takers and Simon gets a sheet to tell him where people have been playing their penalties – and I think that helped.

‘Personally I didn’t think it was a penalty.

‘If that was a penalty then Shaun Cooper at the other end was a penalty as well and there was also a foul on Shaun beforehand.

‘We won’t be going on about it so much because we won the game.

‘Sometimes you get those decisions and sometimes you don’t – there were some strange decisions on both sides.’
