A STAGGERING £2,000 was raised in just 36 hours thanks to a fans-backed initiative to bring supporters flocking to Fratton Park.

The Pompey Supporters’ Trust and the Pompey’s 12th Man Campaign joined forces this week to launch the Pay4aPal ticket scheme.

It gives generous supporters the chance to put cash into the trust’s PayPal account, which will then be used to buy tickets for local supporters to attend home games.

Trust members will be discussing how tickets will be allocated to fans this week.

Spokesman Scott Mclachlan said: ‘We’re delighted and we want to thank everyone who has donated. As more people get to know about it then we are sure that the sum donated for each match will allow many tickets to be bought for fan, good causes and local groups.’

He stressed the tickets will be allocated fairly and that the trust was doing its best to get tickets for the visit of Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Around 13,000 tickets have been told for the match so far.

Simon Bucknall was one Pompey fan who was happy to answer the call by donating £20 ahead of the fixture.

He said: ‘I was going to take my dad Peter but mum has just come out of hospital and he can’t make it, so the least I could do was put the cash into the scheme. It’s a fantastic idea. It’s needed to show spirit and that the supporters are working behind the scenes to keep the club ticking over.

‘I’ll be doing my bit for the rest of the season.’

Kevin Rye, spokesman for campaign organisation Supporters Direct, praised the scheme.

He said: ‘In terms of where Pompey are at the moment it’s going to be much-needed and this is right in line with the sort of things you can be doing as a trust. It shows you are making a case to show what this club is to people and it’s the sort of scheme that should be encouraged.’

If you want to donate and want to nominate someone for a ticket, add their contact information to the donation or email info@pompeytrust.com.

Money can be donated via the Paypal buttons on the trust’s website at pompeytrust.com Cheques addressed to the Pompey Supporters’ Trust can be sent to Pompey Supporters’ Trust, Unit 2, Rodney Road, Portsmouth, PO4 8TB.
