FANS have reacted with cautious optimism to rumours of a potential new buyer for Pompey.

Canadian retail developer Mitchell Goldhar has been mentioned on internet forums and Twitter as possibly being interested in taking over the club.

The billionaire already owns Israel’s most successful football club, Maccabi Tel Aviv, and it is thought he is now looking for a UK team to invest in.

Pompey On Line owner Bill Gillon said: ‘Obviously they’re just rumours at the moment so we don’t want to get excited.

‘But if it is true he will get a very warm welcome from fans. Anyone who wants to come in and run the club in a responsible way will be welcomed.

‘His experience in retail is especially interesting considering the development opportunities around Fratton Park.’

Editor of the True Blue Army website Colin Farmery added on Twitter that he would be ‘delighted’ to have a new buyer on the scene, but advised fans to remain sceptical until more details emerge.

A spokesman for the Pompey Supporter’s Trust said they were aware of the rumours surrounding Mr Goldhar’s interest but had not spoken to him.
