Former Portsmouth midfielder helps Gibraltar to maiden international win

Midfielder Liam Walker was a pivotal figure in a shock 1-0 victory in Armenia on Saturday.

Facing the likes of Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Joseph Chipolina's second-half penalty settled the Nations League Group D4 encounter.

It represented Gibraltar's maiden competitive win since becoming a Uefa-affiliated team in 2013 '“ spanning 23 matches.

Delight also for regular performer Walker, who featured for the entire 90 minutes in Yerevan.

Now aged 30, he appeared 28 times and scored twice for Pompey during the 2012-13 League One campaign.

With family hailing from Waterlooville, Walker came to manager Michael Appleton's attention while representing Gibraltar in a pre-season friendly against the Blues in July 2012.

He subsequently signed for the season, with Guy Whittingham taking over as caretaker during the campaign following Appleton's departure for Blackpool.

Walker spent last season at Notts County following a successful trial, making 15 appearances for the League Two club.

Meanwhile, Armenia have apologised after using the wrong national anthem before the Gibraltar game.

They instead mistakenly played the anthem of Liechtenstein.
