It was the prospect of playing in front of sizeable crowds at his new home which really proved a big appeal to him, however.

Main told portsmouthfc.co.uk: ‘I’m really happy and excited that it’s all been sorted and that I’m now a Pompey player.

‘I had my first training session with the lads on Saturday. I already knew a few of them and the rest have all been brilliant, so I’ve settled in effortlessly.

‘I’ve come here to hopefully achieve promotion and I think that has to be the aim when you join a club like this.
