Marko Futacs marked his first Pompey start with a goal as the Blues gained a well-earned 1-1 draw at Leicester.
The Hungarian striker justified his selection as he fired the visitors into a 20th-minute lead, collecting David Norris’ cross with his chest before blasting past Kasper Schmeichel.
Pompey managed to hold on to their advantage for just four minutes, though, as old-boy David Nugent levelled matters when he got the better of Greg Halford to nod past Stephen Henderson.
But Michael Appleton’s men were well worthy of a point and could have grabbed victory when Halford saw his header came back off the post, while Dave Kitson nodded wide of goal after getting the better of a stranded Schmeichel.
The only negatives on a promising display for Pompey were the bookings of Joel Ward and Halford, who are now suspended for Monday’s clash with Watford for picking up five yellow cards.
