Guy Whittingham believes Gabor Gyepes will pen a new deal to remain at Fratton Park.
But the Blues’ caretaker boss has warned that Pompey may be unable to retain loanee Scott Allan after tonight’s Walsall clash.
Gyepes’ hamstring problem is keeping him out of the visit to Banks’s Stadium, with his contract ending tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Allan is scheduled to return to West Bromwich Albion after tonight’s fixture upon the expiry of his one-month loan deal.
Whittingham made no secret he would like both to remain on his books. But his opinion is mixed over whether that will happen.
Whittingham said: ‘I think Gabor will stay. Obviously he has got a lot of things to think about with security, as most players have.
‘He hasn’t told us that he’s not staying, basically.
‘I am always “the glass is half full rather than half empty” – and believe me that helps at this club!
‘With Scotty, it’s another conversation we need to have with West Brom and the player – and look at our financial situation as well.
‘We have to think about whether we can afford to keep paying what we are to West Brom.
‘Scotty wants to go and play football so if he’s playing football here he will want to stay.
‘But he’s a good player and in some ways is too good for this league and thinks sometimes too far ahead of people and puts people through when expecting people to move quicker and move faster.
‘If a Championship club came in for him I would think that would be of great interest to him.’
