Have your say

Ashley Harris has been told: You have a big year ahead.

That is the warning from Guy Whittingham as the youngster prepares for a third campaign involved in Pompey’s first-team squad.

The Purbrook forward burst on to the scene with five Blues appearances at the tail-end of the 2011-12 campaign.

Last term he featured 29 times, scoring three goals.

But Harris struggled to establish himself in the starting XI and faded away in the second half of the season.

Tom Craddock has since joined David Connolly and Patrick Agyemang to provide attacking competition, with Whittingham seeking another striker.

And Pompey’s boss is looking for talented youngster Harris to respond and impose himself more on the side.

Whittingham said: ‘I think it’s a big year for Ashley.

‘He burst on to the scene as a young kid capable of great enthusiasm and did well.

‘But sometimes it comes too early and you start believing you are better than you actually are.

‘I am not saying Ashley did that. I think he found it tougher last year because I saw him more of a striker or just off the striker rather than a wide man.

‘I think he did better for us coming on as an impact player rather than when he started in the team last year.

‘He finished the season well, though, by scoring the goal at Shrewsbury, which was great for his confidence and good for him.

‘He has to come back and really grab the bull by the horns because it’s a big season for him.’

Harris has made 34 career appearances for Pompey in total.
