Whether to change Pompey’s central-defensive partnership – not a difficult decision, according to Guy Whittingham.

Nonetheless, the option to recall Gabor Gyepes for Carlisle’s visit is an intriguing situation.

The Hungarian was rested for the midweek trip to Hartlepool, with Sam Sodje named in his place to partner Ricardo Rocha.

The new-look central defensive double act responded by picking up a fourth clean sheet of the season for the Blues.

They also claimed a first point in 10 matches, with Sodje outstanding.

Whittingham must now weigh up whether to bring back Gyepes, who was this week named by The News readers as the 2012 Sports Awards Pompey player of the year.

But the caretaker boss has revealed it is not a quandary that has been troubling him.

He said: ‘Obviously with the clean sheet you are tempted not to change it.

‘But you have to make sure you are doing it for the right reason. It’s not a difficult decision, it’s just a decision you have to think long and hard about.

‘It might be tough on whoever is left out because if Gabor comes back in then Ricardo and Sam will say “hang on a minute, what’s going on here?”

‘And if I leave Gabor out after I rested him for the last one, he will think “hang on a minute”. It will be a tough one but they can rest assured that whatever decision it is, it will be for the right reasons.

‘If you have got someone else in there putting pressure on the other two then it’s competition for places, which is a great thing.

‘Footballer managers want to make decisions with their team because they have done well.

‘Not because they are playing badly and you have to drop him because he has cost you a few goals. It’s nice to have the decision where ones in there have done well, so it is difficult to leave them out.’

Whittingham must also decide whether to recall Yassin Moutaouakil at right-back in place of Shaun Cooper.

The Frenchman was another rested at Hartlepool’s Victoria Park.

Meanwhile, striker David Connolly is once again ruled out with a hamstring problem.
