Guy Whittingham insisted he was pleased with his side’s efforts in the 2-0 friendly defeat to Rayo Vallecano.

The Blues boss knew his men would be in for a stern challenge against a team that finished eighth in La Liga last term. But he felt it was another worthwhile work out for his men.

He said: ‘We knew it would be a tough test. There are not going to be too many teams in our league that will play that way.

‘We had to be organised and we had to do a lot of defending because they pass it and pass it. Their movement was excellent at times.

‘But I thought we did well for long periods.

‘We kept our shape and we looked a threat going forward at times.’
