Ricky Holmes admitted he was surprised to hear boos as Pompey struggled to shake off their Scunthorpe hangover, but joked: It’s obviously a good omen.

The winger was recalled to the starting line-up for last night’s 1-0 win over Accrington – after being thrown on as a substitute, with Pompey already 3-0 down at half-time, at Glanford Park on Saturday.

But just a few fans could be heard voicing their displeasure at half-time last night, with the teams locked at 0-0 and Pompey struggling to carve out any real opportunities.

Holmes said: I don’t think Accrington had a chance in that first half.

‘Coming off the back of the 5-1 defeat, we wanted to stay solid and didn’t want to go too gung-ho.

‘So to go into half-time, at 0-0, rather than 3-0 down was an achievement.

‘I thought we looked good on the counter-attack and 0-0 at half-time didn’t seem so bad to me.

‘There weren’t many booing this time, to be honest.

‘But I don’t agree with people booing at half-time when it’s 0-0.

‘There were some boos against AFC Wimbledon at half-time as well and we won the game that day, too.

‘So maybe it’s a good omen and they should boo us off at half-time more often!

‘I don’t think there is much wrong with 0-0 at half-time because we always looked like we would nick a goal.’

While the former Barnet man knows all about the scrap to beat the drop from League Two, he is keen to ensure Pompey don’t take their foot off the pedal.

He said: ‘I’ve seen the other results and they didn’t go for us. We’re still in a battle.

‘But we’ve won this one and we managed to reach our target of seven points from the last four games that the manager set us.

‘We are going steadily on what we wanted to achieve.

‘The setback at Scunthorpe feels like we haven’t achieved it but I think we showed a lot of character in getting that win.

‘It’s a massive part of surviving a relegation battle.

‘If you can bounce back after bad results, it gives you a real chance.’
