Barnet times’ Adam Newsom gives the lowdown on...

RICKY HOLMES

AGE: 26

POSITION: WINGER/STRIKER

PREVIOUS CLUBS: BARNET, CHELMSFORD.

n So what type of player are Pompey getting in Ricky Holmes?

A very good one. A lot of Barnet fans felt that, if Ricky had stayed fit last season, the side wouldn’t have gone down.

He was probably the team’s best player up to the point he got injured. I’m pleased he got the move to Portsmouth. He deserves it.

n Sounds promising. A winger who can excite fans?

Well, his best position is probably just behind the main striker, but Edgar Davids shifted him to the wing around October.

He may not be the quickest, but he’s very good at getting to the byline and getting a cross in.

Ricky is a right footer playing on the left, but can go either way and isn’t predictable at all.

He is quite traditional in that he will get past a defender and get a cross in.

Having said that, if he gets on a run centrally he’s hard to stop.

n Injuries slowed him down, though.

It was a shame. It was a really complicated one.

He did the original injury two years ago but the rod in his foot broke so he had to have surgery to sort it out.

I saw the X-rays from it and it wasn’t straightforward.

But I’m glad he’s fit now. He’s had two longish spells out with it but, apart from that, has been fine. If he stays fit Pompey have a very good player.

n There was a lot of interest in him, then?

There were a lot of clubs keen and he could have stepped up to League One level if he wanted to.

There were certainly offers on the table for him.

Gillingham bid for him in January and I know Russell Slade at Leyton Orient was keen on getting him in this summer.

I think Ricky wanted the challenge of getting Pompey back up again.

I’m very, very confident Pompey have a good player moving forward.

n Can we expect goals as well as crosses, too?

He has goals in his locker, as he showed when he scored a hat-trick against Burton Albion last season.

Ricky was unplayable that day and does have games like that.

Perhaps the one thing you could look for in terms of improvement is to have more games like that.

If he did, he’d be playing at a higher level.
