Rejuvenated Dave Kitson is thriving because he is playing alongside a strike partner and is battling for his place, according to Guy Whittingham.

The former Reading and Stoke striker has looked a different player after returning to the side in the wake of Steve Cotterill’s departure to Nottingham Forest.

His new strike partnership with Luke Varney already appears to be bringing more out of Kitson, right, who made no secret of the fact he did not enjoy playing as a lone striker.

And Whittingham believes competition is also playing its part.

The joint caretaker boss said: ‘It’s hard work up there on your own.

‘But you do feel you can share the workload when you have someone up there with you.

‘But sometimes as a player, you can gather yourself and get that enthusiasm going again to come back and do well after you’ve been out of the side.

‘He has grabbed his opportunity really well.

‘There is competition for places now and maybe Dave Kitson hasn’t had that before.

‘We’ve got several players all pushing for places up there. ‘
