Dave Kitson welcomed the news of Pompey’s pursuit for new strikers as he insisted: I’m looking forward to it.
The Blues striker netted his first goal of the season in the midweek 1-0 win over Reading and has often made it clear that he prefers to play with a strike partner alongside him, rather than play a lone role.
But with Benjani now back in the ranks and Norwegian international Erik Huseklepp completing his £1.5m move to Fratton Park, Kitson is embracing the fact he could now face more severe competition for his place in the side.
Kitson said: ‘It’s good to see strikers coming in.
‘I know the manager has worked very hard to bring players in.
‘If you want to play 4-4-2, you need four centre-backs and four strikers to choose from.
‘The manager has been working hard with the owners to do that.
‘It’s great to see Benji coming in and we know what he’s all about. We’ve got the King (Kanu) who was excellent against Reading and if we get one more, we’re looking in a lot better shape than we were.
‘There will be more competition for places but it gives us far more flexibility to play with two strikers up front.’
