Notts County boss Ricardo Moniz believes Pompey are equipped to win promotion out of League Two.

The Magpies host Paul Cook’s side tomorrow seeking to build on their disappointing position of 16th at the moment.

They face a Blues team boasting the best away record outside the Premier League, with five league victories so far.

Yet Moniz has built a good record at Meadow Lane, with five victories in their last six fixtures in all competitions.

Regardless, the man who served as skills coach at Tottenham under Martin Jol is convinced Pompey are one of the favourites to climb out of the league.

He said: ‘When I worked at Tottenham, Portsmouth were a Premier League side.

‘They had players like Jermain Defoe and Prince Boateng and Harry Redknapp was the manager.

‘They were very impressive so it is very surprising to me to see them in League Two.

‘Portsmouth are a big club with a big fan base. I think more than 2,000 will be here at the game tomorrow, which is fantastic.

‘They have a big budget, but that means nothing.

‘You only have to look at Manchester United going out to Middlesbrough and then last year they lost to MK Dons.

‘They are one of the favourites to go up this season and they are worthy of that title.

‘But we have our own ambitions. We are five or six points off the play-offs and that’s why it’s a very important game.’

The Magpies lost at home to table-topping Plymouth earlier this month.

But Moniz has been impressed with their Meadow Lane form.

He added: ‘We played Plymouth and had the better statistics in everything.

‘We must take revenge for that. We played better than them in every department, but couldn’t finish them off.

‘I still think we are vulnerable on the counter attack as the game against Exeter proved. We need to get the balance right between defence and attack.

‘The creative players must stand up to score goals and be ruthless in the final third.’
