John Marquis eyed Pompey’s fixture list and promised: I will score goals

The on-loan Millwall striker vowed he will add to the two strikes he has already bagged for Guy Whittingham’s side in the coming weeks.

Marquis agreed to extend his loan stay with the Blues last week, after his initial one-month deal came to a close following the win over Bury.

He finds his starting place under pressure, though, with Ryan Bird scoring against Torquay following his return from a spell at the Hawks, and David Connolly returning to fitness.

The 21-year-old has bagged two goals in five Pompey starts, plus two appearances off the bench.

He has failed to score in his past three outings.

But Marquis feels he is benefiting from the run of games he wasn’t getting at parent club Millwall.

‘Maybe being in and out of a side wasn’t the way to go at Millwall and I should have gone out on loan earlier,’ said Marquis.

‘But it’s happening now and I can play, so the sharpness will come.

‘I can learn more about myself, improve my game and continue to score goals. There’s a few games for me this month and a chance for me to score some more.’

Marquis has seen his form go up and down since arriving at Fratton Park.

He promised he would always be honest about that – and would never shirk putting in a shift, no matter how he’s playing.

‘If you make a mistake you should hold your hands up, if you haven’t played well you should hold your hands up,’ he added.

‘It’s life. You can’t play really well every game.

‘But working is something that’s either in you or not.

‘If that’s in you on a match day you will be alright.’
