Paul Cook’s side produced a decent display and twice took the lead in Alan McLoughlin’s benefit match, as Gary Roberts and Michael Smith were on target before the break.

Roberts produced a tidy finish early in the piece and Smith then restored the lead after Lewis Grabban’s leveller as he took advantage of a fortunate ricochet to steer home.

Second-half goals from Jordan Ibe and Dan Gosling appeared to seal the result for Eddie Howe’s side.

Pompey, however, had the final say in the closing minutes as substitute May’s shot took a big deflection and found the bottom corner in front of the Fratton end.
