CITY MP Penny Mordaunt hopes the Pompey Supporters’ Trust’s achievements so far can be a catalyst for other clubs to follow suit.

The trust is within touching distance of claiming the keys to Fratton Park after signing exclusivity documents with administrators PKF this week.

The fans’ group has worked on the takeover bid for a year and is now set to launch its share prospectus on Monday.

And the news of the trust’s landmark moment was met with delight by Ms Mordaunt, who has been a staunch supporter of the group’s takeover efforts.

Last month, she called on the government to reform football finance and governance rules, branding them ‘not fit for purpose’.

Now Ms Mordaunt, who represents Portsmouth North, is hopeful the latest developments in the Pompey takeover saga will give the club a bright new future.

She said: ‘They have done amazingly to get to where they are.

‘They have proved their critics wrong.

‘They have stuck with it against incredible odds and they have done an amazing job.

‘They have never given up and there were moments when it looked impossible to do it.

‘But they have continued to push forward and the trust is a shining example of what can be achieved – I’ve been bowled over by their professionalism.’

Ms Mordaunt added she is in regular contact with the trust and will be meeting with the group in due course.

She added: ‘Even those sceptical, thinking it’s not going to work, have got behind them and supported them.

‘We have all been touched by the amount of support for Pompey from other clubs when playing away.

‘It has been quite an amazing experience to see this happen.

‘I hope it will be a catalyst and inspiration for other clubs to take their club back from owners who are not doing it justice.’

Fans wanting to purchase a share in the trust’s takeover bid can find out more by attending Pompey’s home games today and Tuesday.

A four-page guide produced in partnership by The News and the Pompey Supporters’ Trust will be handed out before each game.
