Pompey’s Academy youngsters returned from their mid-season break only to be sent home after their

scheduled Alliance Youth League match with Southend United this morning was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Because of heavy rainfall overnight, Academy coach Paul Hardyman made an early visit to Pompey’s Eastleigh training ground to find the pitch

surface saturated and, as more heavy rain fell, he quickly arranged for Southend to be informed to save them a wasted journey.

‘It needed an early decision to let everyone know and so Paul was up at the training ground before daylight to find puddles on the surface

that couldn’t be drained which was disappointing,’ said Pompey’s head of education & welfare Jon Slater.

‘Everyone was really looking forward to getting the season back on track after the break, particularly as it was to be against Southend

who we beat in the FA Youth Cup at Fratton Park and took a point in a 1-1 draw in the away league match.

‘Now all we can hope for is that the weather improves otherwise our rescheduled league match against Watford on Tuesday may also have to be called off.’
