Pompey’s plucky performance counted for nothing as they went down to a 4-0 defeat to Chelsea in the FA Cup today.
Four second half-goals led to a third-round scoreline which flattered the Premier League side.
Juan Mata’s disputed tap-in two minutes after the restart proved key but it appeared Ashley Cole handled in the build-up to the goal.
Then the Blues were hit with three goals in the final seven minutes with Ramires grabbing two before Frank Lampard netted from the edge of the box with the last kick of the game.
Michael Appleton’s side had good chances throughout, with Dave Kitson having a great opportunity after 28 seconds but he ultimately fired wide.
David Norris and Aaron Mokoena also had good chances for Pompey with Fernando Torres forcing Stephen Henderson into a fine stop.
A triple chance somehow didn’t end up in the net nine minutes after the restart as Marko Futacs, Joel Ward and David Norris all went close – with John Terry clearing off the line from Ward.
Chelsea then upped the heat on the visitors late on but it was a scoreline which was rough justice on Pompey, who can take a lot of heart from their performance.
