Not quite getting away from it all for Awford

Andy Awford is back on the Pompey beat – not that he has ever been away.

The Blues boss returned home on Sunday night following a week’s holiday in the sunshine with his family.

A stolen seven days in a chaotic summer of rebuilding and reconstruction for the man who took the managerial helm permanently on May 1.

Yet despite being a lengthy plane flight away, work has never been far from his side – and particularly his phone.

Life at Pompey doesn’t grind to a halt while the manager is elsewhere and Awford insists he has been as busy as ever – albeit on the end of his mobile.

Now he is ready to put some of his negotiations into practice as he seeks to strengthen his squad and add to his backroom.

‘The phone has been going non-stop while I have been away,’ said Awford.

‘I’ve been running inside dealing with calls while my wife has been doing her hair, it just hasn’t stopped!

‘It’s always nice to go away and get a break, spending some time with my family and generally just getting away from the area for a little while.

‘Sometimes you need that. I really enjoyed it and now feel back in the land of the living.

‘There was still plenty to do over that last week, though.

‘There have been calls from agents, getting the new training ground up and running, work at Fratton Park and the dressing rooms need sorting out.

‘Then we have got vacancies for the Academy manager and Academy coach which need filling up as soon as possible.

‘It is pretty full-on at the moment with everything which needs organising, but it is something I relish.

‘I have put the phone down on occasions, though, and there are agents out there who are starting to understand that I am maybe not as naive as they thought I was!’

Meanwhile, Pompey’s Football League fixtures will be released at 9am on Wednesday, June 18.

By that stage they will already know their opposition in the Capital One Cup, with that draw taking place 24 hours earlier at 9.30am on Tuesday, June 17.

In addition, the Blues’ squad will return for pre-season on June 26.
